The gun positions were dug into the ground or quarried out of the rock. There are a number of types of positions (A-F), varying in size and shape. Some of them are covered, and some are open. The weaponry used in them was a machine gun or rifle.
Type A had a quadrangular base, with one side segmented in shape. Below the loophole there is often a recess for the base of a machine gun. The position often has an ammunition cupboard.

Type B is quadrangular in shape and varies in size; the wall varies in length from about a metre to approx. four metres.

Type C is small in size and of varying shape. The loophole is in the segment-shaped wall.

Type D is elliptical (oval-shaped) and the roof is vaulted. There are loopholes pointing in three different directions. It covers an area of approx. 2.5 m2. The only remaining Type D position in the land fortifications is at base XXXVI, Ruukinranta.

Type E is elongated and varying in shape. There are rifle stations for 4-8 gunners. There are E positions only at base XXVIII in the Mäkkylä area of Espoo

Type F is elongated and folded in shape. There are rifle stations for 8-9 gunners. Two F stations have been preserved in the land fortifications, both at Ruukinranta in Espoo.
