SITES OF THE EARLY METAL PERIOD
The dwelling sites of the Early
Metal Period are often in the same locations as their Stone Age
predecessors, and it is quite possible that the Late Stone Age
settlers formed the main part of the Early Metal Period population.
There are, however, signs of an expansion of settlement with
finds from Sperrings, Järvikylä, Muurala, Puolarmetsä,
the Central Park of Espoo, and from Henttaa, Oittaa, Leppävaara
and Lintuvaara. Muurala on the Espoonjoki River appears to have
been a central location. Several ancient dwelling sites are located
along the river.
The Early Metal Period settlers often chose sites with easily
worked soils that could be farmed. The fact that these were no
longer by the shoreline reflects changes in the prehistoric economy. |
